Watercolour tattoos recreate the look of a watercolour painting on skin: soft washes of colour, gentle gradients, drips and splashes that bleed beyond the edges of the design, often with little or no black outline. It’s one of the most painterly styles in tattooing, and at Silent Moon it’s worked by artists who understand how colour settles and heals, in our private Bermondsey studio, South East London.
Every watercolour tattoo is custom. We never work from flash. Your artist chooses the palette, flow and placement around your idea and your skin tone, so the colour sits naturally and looks like a painting made for you.
Pure watercolour and watercolour with linework. Pure watercolour relies on colour alone for a soft, dreamy finish. Adding fine linework or a black base gives the design structure and definition. Watercolour also pairs beautifully with realism and illustrative work, as colour splashes behind a portrait, flower or animal.
Do watercolour tattoos fade? Soft colour with no structure can fade and blur faster than bolder styles. That’s why our artists anchor each piece with enough contrast, saturation and, where it helps, black linework, so it keeps its shape for years. Good aftercare and sun protection make a real difference too.
Watercolour and cover-ups. Light colour washes can’t hide an older tattoo on their own. If you’d like to cover something, ask about our cover-up work, and we may combine watercolour accents with a stronger design.
What to expect. Most watercolour pieces are finished in one or two sessions, and a touch-up after healing can refresh the brightest colours. Your artist agrees sizing, placement and a guide price at your free consultation.
