Micro realism tattoos recreate photographic detail at a very small scale: a pet portrait, an eye, a flower or a landmark the size of a coin or a playing card, shaded with tiny needles to capture light, texture and depth. It’s one of the most technically demanding styles in tattooing, and at Silent Moon it’s worked by artists with the precision it needs, in our private Bermondsey studio, South East London.
Every micro-realism tattoo is custom. We never work from flash. You bring a reference photo, and your artist simplifies and redraws it so the most important details still read clearly at a small size.
Micro-realism vs fine line. Fine line tattoos are built mostly from thin lines. Micro-realism is built from soft, tonal shading, like a tiny photograph. For bigger, full-scale portraits, see our realism tattoos.
Will a micro-realism tattoo last? It can, with the right size and placement. Very fine detail packed too tightly can soften and blur as the skin changes, so our artists set a sensible minimum size and keep enough contrast for the image to stay clear. Flatter, protected areas like the inner forearm and upper arm hold detail best.
Micro-realism and cover-ups. Small, delicate pieces can’t hide an older tattoo. If you want to cover something, ask about our cover-up work and we’ll suggest a bolder approach.
What to expect. Most micro-realism pieces are finished in a single session, though the detail can take longer than the size suggests. Your artist agrees sizing, placement and a guide price at your free consultation, and the sharper your reference photo, the better the result.
