Lettering tattoos turn words into artwork: names, dates, quotes, song lines and meaningful phrases, drawn in a style that suits what they say, from flowing script and calligraphy to gothic blackletter and clean typewriter text. Getting the letterforms, spacing and flow right is a craft of its own, and at Silent Moon it’s worked with care in our private Bermondsey studio, South East London.
Every lettering tattoo is custom. We don’t just type your words in a font. Your artist draws the lettering by hand to fit your placement, balancing each letter so the text follows the curve of your body and reads naturally.
Name, date and quote tattoos are the most requested: a child’s name, a meaningful date, a line from a song, poem or book. Handwriting tattoos recreate the actual writing of someone you love from a card or letter, one of the most personal memorial pieces you can wear.
Script, calligraphy and other styles. Script and calligraphy give elegant, flowing lines; blackletter and gothic give bold, traditional weight; fine line lettering keeps things small and delicate. Lettering also works beautifully added to other designs, as a banner, a name in a portrait or a line beneath a flower.
Will small text stay readable? Only if it’s sized properly. Letters set too small or too close together can blur as the tattoo ages, so your artist will suggest a minimum size and spacing that keeps your words clear for years.
Check every word. We’ll confirm spelling, punctuation and dates with you before the stencil goes on. If your text is in another language, have the translation checked by a native speaker first; it’s permanent, so it’s worth being sure.
What to expect. Most lettering pieces are finished in a single, short session. Your artist agrees the wording, style, size, placement and a guide price at your free consultation.
