Dotwork tattoos build shading and images entirely from thousands of small dots, with more dots packed closer together for darker areas and fewer, spaced-out dots for lighter ones. The result is a soft, textured gradient that no line or solid fill can match. At Silent Moon it’s worked by patient, precise artists in our private Bermondsey studio, South East London.
Every dotwork tattoo is custom. We never work from flash. Your artist plans the density and flow of each gradient around your design and your body, so the shading reads clearly from a distance and rewards a closer look.
Mandalas, ornamental and sacred geometry are the classic dotwork subjects: symmetrical patterns, lace-like ornaments and fine geometric shapes, usually in black. Dotwork also works as a shading technique inside other styles, giving botanicals, animals and portraits a delicate, stippled texture.
Will a dotwork tattoo age well? Yes. Black dotwork holds up well over time; the dots soften slightly as they settle, which keeps gradients smooth. Our artists space the dots with healing in mind so fine details don’t merge together.
Dotwork and cover-ups. Light stippling can’t hide an old tattoo on its own, but dense dotwork combined with solid blackwork can help disguise one. Bring a clear photo of your existing tattoo and we’ll tell you honestly what’s possible.
What to expect. Dotwork is built dot by dot, so it takes a little longer than lined or solid shading. Smaller pieces are usually finished in one session; larger mandalas and sleeves are built over several. Your artist agrees sizing, placement and a guide price at your free consultation.
