 01/ Abstract
Abstract realism portrait tattoo with colour brushstrokes on forearm — Silent Moon, Bermondsey London

Abstract tattoos are built from shape, colour, line and texture rather than a literal picture: expressive brushstrokes, ink splashes, geometric fragments and continuous lines arranged to create mood and movement. It’s one of the most personal and artistic styles in tattooing, and at Silent Moon it’s a signature of our studio, in our private Bermondsey studio, South East London.

Every abstract tattoo is custom. Because there’s no fixed subject to copy, your artist composes the piece around your body, placing strokes and shapes so they follow its natural lines and feel like one flowing artwork rather than a picture stuck on top.

Abstract realism combines a realistic subject, often a portrait, flower or animal, with abstract elements that break it apart: bold brushstrokes, splashes of colour, geometric shapes and sketch lines. It’s the style our studio is best known for, mixing the depth of realism with the freedom of contemporary art.

Graphic and minimalist abstract strips things back to a few confident marks: a single textured brushstroke, a block of colour, a fine continuous line. These pieces suit smaller placements and work beautifully as a first tattoo.

Will an abstract tattoo age well? Yes, when it’s planned properly. Soft colour without structure can blur over time, so our artists anchor each piece with strong black and enough contrast to keep it reading clearly for years. Bold blackwork abstract can also work as a cover-up for an older tattoo.

What to expect. Smaller pieces are usually finished in one session; larger abstract realism work is built over several. Your artist agrees sizing, placement and a guide price at your free consultation. Prefer to start from something ready-made? Several of our artists have available abstract designs on their artist pages.
